10 teams from 6 nations participated in a football championship hosted by Grant Thornton Germany on 10 June. After an exciting match, Team Austria won 2:0 against Wiesbaden and defended last year’s victory. The team from Switzerland/Liechtenstein ranked third. The most successful scorer was Toni Ziba from Team Austria with 6 goals. The venue for the perfectly organized event was Kelsterbach close to Frankfurt; a few days later the local stadium was the location of the final workout of the German National Football Team before they left for the Confed Cup in Russia.

German Open means that the tournament is open for teams from the network of Grant Thornton International, also mixed male and female teams are welcome. The event emerged from an idea of the German partners Michael Haeger und Rudi Gries to establish closer relations between the German office locations. In the meantime the German Open became a truly international tournament: This year 5 teams from Germany and 5 teams from other European member firms were competing for the giant trophy, i.e. Wiesbaden, Cologne/Duesseldorf, Hamburg, Team Germany, UK, Poland, Austria, Luxembourg and Switzerland/Liechtenstein as well as a „Team International“ with players from Germany and some member firms.

Michael Häger: „I am very excited to see that individuals from all over Europe gather for this event and really enjoy it. The number of German teams is equal to the ones from other member firms which demonstrates that we are a truly international organisation.”

The evening before a get together party took place with about 100 participants who used a barbecue and drinks to get to know each other better and to chat about football. Rudi Gries: „The German Open event is a perfect opportunity to see colleagues not only in the usual office environment. We often work together across borders but it really makes a difference to know each other – this is a much better basis for real teamwork. I am already looking forward to the tournament next year!”

Save the Date
